Date: 06 June 1944
Location: Sainte-Mère-Église; Lower Normandy; France
Coordinates (lat, lon): 49.411948, -1.318744
Description: In the early hours of D-Day, US airborne units were dropped to the west of UTAH and OMAHA beaches, to secure the west flank of the invasion and to capture communication links. The causeways leading inland from the beaches were vital to the progress of the invasion, as the fields behind the beaches had been deliberately flooded by the Germans to deny their use to heavy armoured vehicles. The discarded parachute canopies of US troops can be seen in the fields to the west of Sainte-Mère-Église, along with two crashed gliders.
